A little preparation goes a long way when converting raster images to SVG. The tracer can only work with the information your source image provides — so a clean, high-contrast, properly sized file will always produce cleaner, more accurate vectors. Think of conversion as a negotiation: everything the tracer draws — every edge, every color region, every speck — comes directly from the pixels it sees. Follow these tips for the best results.

1. Clean Up the Background
Remove solid backgrounds before converting. VTracer will trace background shapes too, adding unnecessary complexity to your SVG. A solid white background, for example, becomes a giant white rectangle in the output — extra paths that do nothing but bloat the file. For logos and icons, export or cut out a transparent-background PNG first.
2. Use Adequate Resolution
Images should be at least 500px on the longest side. Lower resolution means less detail for VTracer to work with. Our tool auto-resizes images over 2000px. As a rough guide: an icon or logo at 512px converts cleanly, while the same design at 128px produces wobbly, indistinct paths because the tracer simply has fewer edge pixels to follow.
3. Reduce JPEG Artifacts
JPEG compression creates color noise that VTracer will trace as separate regions. Use PNG when possible for cleaner edges. If you only have a JPG, choose one saved at high quality (low compression) — the blocky "mosquito noise" around edges from aggressive JPEG compression shows up directly in the vector output as stray shapes.
4. Increase Contrast
High contrast between foreground and background helps VTracer produce cleaner, more accurate paths. The more clearly the tracer can separate your subject from its surroundings, the fewer ambiguous regions it has to resolve. A quick levels or contrast adjustment in any free editor often improves output more than any converter setting.
5. Mind the Color Count
Fewer colors convert faster and produce smaller files. A flat two-tone design might become a handful of paths, while a photograph that has been posterized to 100 colors produces dozens of regions. When file size matters, simplify your palette before converting.
6. Remove Noise and Speckle
Tiny specks, dust, and compression noise become tiny vector shapes. Where possible, clean them from the source first, or use the converter's speckle-removal filter to discard regions smaller than a threshold — a huge win for scanned line art.
What Makes a Great Source Image
The best sources for vectorization are, in order: vector-friendly logos and icons with flat colors; clean scanned line art or sketches on white; high-contrast illustrations; and finally photographs, which convert to stylized poster art rather than photorealistic vectors.
